Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The key to sourcing the best fruit is expert local knowledge — with more than 20 years experience in the Napa Valley, Tony Biagi knows good dirt, and where to find it. Tony Biagi is a sixth generation Californian whose first experience with wine was watching his father make modest amounts of a private label in the family garage.

Biagi enrolled at U.C. Davis as a marine biology major, but wound up graduating with a degree in oenology. Tony bolstered his winemaking experience at Duckhorn Vineyards under the tutelage of Tom Rinaldi, and served as the head winemaker for the Paraduxx label before assuming winemaking duties for Neal Family Vineyard, eventually landing at Plumpjack Group. Biagi’s tenure with the company included roles as winemaker for the company’s PlumpJack estate, as well as spearheading the wine program at CADE on Howell Mountain.

Tony’s wines have achieved extraordinary marks from the world’s top critics, with two of his PlumpJack wines earning 99 and 98 points respectively from Robert Parker, and a CADE Cabernet that earned 98 points in its second vintage.

In 2012 Tony joined Hourglass to pursue a personal goal to make estate-bottled wines from exceptional vineyards. His relationship with Carteirra is a natural extension of his ever evolving winemaking career.

Sonoma Chardonnay

Sonoma offers something unique in California winegrowing — cooler valleys that benefit from their proximity to the ocean breezes where Burgundy varietals can thrive. Winemaker Matt Courtney is intimately familiar with two of the very best.

Born in Meridian, Mississippi, Matt moved to the Bay Area at the tender age of 10. While earning a degree in philosophy at U.C. Berkeley, Matt explored the burgeoning local food scene, including a stint at Chez Panisse. Upon graduation, Matt moved to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, taking a position at Restaurant Terroir to support his skiing habit. Inspired by Master Sommelier Ken Fredrickson, Matt passed the certificate level exam, embarking on a path that  eventually led to France to begin a serious course of study.

After a life-changing afternoon in Burgundy with Jacques Lardière of Maison Louis Jadot, Courtney realized that to attain the level of understanding to which he aspired he would need to make wine. Returning to California, Matt enrolled at U.C. Davis and took a cellar position at Robert Biale Vineyards under winemaker Al Perry.

After graduation a fortuitous meeting with Iconic winemaker Helen Turley led to an assistant winemaker position for Marcassin, the personal label Turley was launching with husband John Wetlaufer. For the next eight years, Matt worked closely with John and Helen  to develop their heritage vineyards and winery, experiencing every aspect of winemaking and winegrowing.

In 2013, Matt accepted the position of winemaker at Arista Winery in the Russian River Valley where he oversees two prime estate vineyards. His unique affiliation with Carteirra allows Matt to pursue his passion for producing small lots of exceptional wines from extraordinary sites.
